Attorney Lance Behringer is putting a price to the crime. As Suge Knight already is serving a 28-year-prison sentence, the prosecutor for the family of Terry Carter Jr., whom he killed, is going for his nearly empty pockets requesting $81 million.Â
In deliberations of the month-long trial, the closing arguments wrapped when Behringer requested $81 million for the three women dealing with the utmost heartbreak, Carter’s two daughters, Nekaya and Crystal, and now widowed wife, Lilian Carter. Behringer believes Knight should pay one million yearly for 27 years to all three women, the amount of time Carter would be expected to live had he not been struck by Knight’s truck.Â
He says, “Dying on the concrete floor alone at Tam’s Burgers was not a natural death. He was taken from these three women.”Â
Knight ran over Terry Carter Jr with his truck in 2015.
He added, “Nobody’s comfortable talking about money. But that’s what we have to do.” Though he requests $81 million, there’s no say on how Knight would pay, as his current net worth is below $1 million.
To counter it, Knight’s defense attorney, David Kenner, called the incident “a tragic accident and a tragic loss of human life.” Kenner then adds that he isn’t “challenging the worth of Mr. Carter’s life,” just questioning who should be held responsible.Â
He closes with, “With all due apologies to Ms. Carter and the Carter family, I ask that you render a verdict of not liable.”Â
Carter’s family filed the lawsuit in June 2015. Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and NBC Universal were also named as defendants but successfully fought the complaint.
