Dave Chappelle Honored By Alma Mater Months After Students Called Him Out Over Remarks About The Transgender Community

Dave Chappelle is set to be honored by the same school that called him out over his remarks about the transgender community.

And it’s not just any school; it’s his alma mater. Only a few months have passed since Chappelle, 48, received a load of backlash following his comedy bits that targeted the trans community.

One of the in-person incidents in which he was publicly criticized for his alleged anti-transgender rhetoric was when he visited his former school Duke Ellington School of Arts, in Washington, D.C. The comedian visited the school back in November, and instead of being met with praise, he was welcomed by an outcry from students that he invited to an assembly for them to discuss their issues with his previous comments.

“I’m 16 and I think you’re childish,” said one student during the event who stepped up to confront Chappelle. Now, because of Chappelle’s “ongoing commitment and service to the school,” the school is honoring him by renaming its performance theater after him, despite some students opposing the move.

However, Chappelle initially offered not to have his name over the theater if those who opposed the move raised more money for the school. Those who were for Chappelle being honored with the renaming of the building won.
