Multiple people are dead and dozens injured after an Amtrak train derailed in Missouri.
The incident occurred Monday in Mendon when an Amtrak Southwest Chief train struck a dump truck at a public crossing.
Missouri, Cpl. Justin Dunn, a spokesperson for Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop B, told reporters Monday evening that three people were killed and at least 50 others were injured.
Dunn shared authorities are still working to confirm the exact number of fatalities, however, two people were killed aboard the train and the third person was in the truck.
The packed train traveling from Los Angeles to Chicago had sold out of every seat, with many passengers being stationed inside the observation car. There were 243 passengers on board and 12 crew members.
The accident is the second deadly Amtrak derailment to occur within several days. On Sunday, three people were killed, and two were injured when an Amtrak train slammed into a car in Brentwood, California.
