R. Kelly is suing a Brooklyn detention center after being placed on suicide watch.
The disgraced singer is filing a lawsuit against MDC Brooklyn for placing him on an involuntary suicide watch. Kelly claims he has no intention of harming himself. He states that the order is “cruel and unusual punishment,” and the harsh conditions came only because he’s a celebrity.
Kelly claims he was put under suicide watch following the guilty verdict that landed him 30 years in prison. He argues that the order violates his 8th amendment rights because “he is not suicidal and expressly told MDC officials that he was not suicidal and had no thoughts of harming himself or others.”
Kelly adds that he’s been placed in a single cell without bed rails, no showers, no shaving, no toilet paper, and being forced to eat meals with his hands. He believes it’s ironic that inmates on suicide watch do not receive psychiatric care.
Kelly is suing for distress from emotional damages.
