Apple is looking to make people’s gas station experience more convenient by allowing users to pay for their gas using CarPlay.

The company has partnered with energy company HF Sinclair, which operates over 1,600 gas stations in 30 states, to roll out the feature at gas stations across the country. Using CarPlay, customers will be able to hand-select the pump and the gas they’d like to use.

“We are excited by the idea that consumers could navigate to a Sinclair station and purchase fuel from their vehicle navigation screen,” HF Sinclair’s Jack Barger said in a statement to Reuters.

Apple originally unveiled the feature during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June, though no details were revealed at the time. While HF Sinclair and Apple are still tightlipped about certain aspects, the fundamental concept behind the CarPlay upgrade is allowing customers to use their vehicle’s touchscreen to pay or fuel without having to pull out a credit card. For this to work, users must download the apps for the participating gas stations. Once everything is set up, the navigation software can point you in the direction of a station and start the refueling session.

As of now, there is no timeline for when the feature will debut, though the company is eyeing a fall release with its iOS 16 software update. CarPlay can already be used to pay for EV charging sessions, food, and parking. Soon, users will also be able to track mileage for work travel.
