Actor James Caan, Known for His Roles in “The Godfather,” “Misery” and “Elf,” Dies at 82

Oscar-nominated actor James Caan best known for his work in “The Godfather,” “Misery” and “Elf,” died Wednesday, his family revealed in a statement Thursday on Twitter.

“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6,” the statement read. “The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time.”

A cause of death was not disclosed. The actor was 82 years old.

Caan got his start starring as Chicago Bears halfback Brian Piccolo in “Brian’s Song,” a TV movie that debuted in 1971.

He later went on to a play role in 1972’s “The Godfather,” as hotheaded Sonny Corleone, which earned him an Oscar nomination.

He’s also starred in films like “Theif,” “Rollerball,” “Misery,” and the Christmas tale, “Elf.”
