Nicki Minaj’s husband Kenneth Petty was sentenced to a year of home confinement Wednesday after failing to register as a sex offender in California.
According to Rolling Stone, Petty will have to pay a $55,000 fine and enter a three-year probationary period following his sentence.
Court records filed before the sentencing show the government requested that Petty be given a 15-month prison sentence and five years of supervised release. However, the judge on the case opted to provide him with a lighter sentence.
During the hearing, Petty accepted culpability.
“I take full responsibility for whatever happens today,” he said. “I’m ashamed, embarrassed, and disrespected my wife’s brand. There are no excuses. I broke the law. I thank you for giving me the chance to speak, to apologize.”
Nicki Minaj did not attend the hearing to avoid creating a media circus. Instead, she provided a letter to the court explaining how Petty’s incarceration would affect her family, specifically their young son.
“I have no doubt my son would be traumatized if his father would be taken out of his life,” she wrote. “I’ve known Kenneth Petty for over 20 years. When I first met him, I knew he needed guidance… I’ve seen his genuine evolution first hand.”
It was previously reported that Petty was indicted in March of 2020 for failing to register as a sex offender in California, where he had moved with Nicki Minaj after their marriage.
