New York Yankees icon Derek Jeter has broken his silence about the infamous rumor that he used to give one-night stands gift baskets.
During a segment from ESPN Films’ latest documentary series, “The Captain,” the 48-year-old slammed the rumor, which has plagued him since at least 2011. That year, the New York Post published a story where they claimed Jeter would give women he slept with gift baskets filled with sports memorabilia.
“I read the article. You know, you see it, and then it’s like, ‘How the f**k did people come up with this?’ You know, basically, that’s it. And who would believe this shit? And you believed it!” he stated in a preview for the doc.
Jeter stated that at one point, the rumor “became larger than life” but is firm that it never happened.
“The Captain” will follow the life and career of the famed baseball player over seven episodes. During the special, Jeter will also dive into what ended his friendship with Alex Rodriguez and the many remarks his fellow Yankee made about him over the years. One instance in particular that will be addressed is A-Rod’s 2001 Esquire interview, where he said Jeter was “blessed” with “true talent around him” and never had to lead. Rodriguez will also tell his side in the show
ESPN will kick off the series beginning on July 18th at 10 p.m.
