An Ohio man has been charged with raping a 10-year-old girl who traveled to Indiana to get an abortion.
On Tuesday, police in Franklin County, Ohio, arrested 27-year-old Gershon Fuentes, who confessed to raping a child. NBC News reports he’s been charged with the rape of a minor, and he could be looking at life in prison along with deportation.
The news comes are the county continues to grapple with the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe. v. Wade.
“She was forced to have to travel out of the state to Indiana to seek to terminate the pregnancy and maybe save her life,” said Joe Biden said last week at the White House. “Ten years old — 10 years old — raped, six weeks pregnant, already traumatized, was forced to travel to another state.”
This week, Ohio Republicans introduced a bill that would outlaw all abortions, with one exception being if the mother’s life is in danger. Ohio currently bans all abortions at six weeks of pregnancy unless the mother’s life is endangered. There are no exceptions for rape or incest.
Fuentes’s bond was set at $2 million, and he’s expected to appear in court for a hearing next week.
