A couple called out Walgreens after an employee denied them condoms for religious reasons.

Earlier this month, Nathan Perez blasted Walgreens in a few tweets. Perez says his girlfriend went into the store in Hayward to purchase condoms after forgetting her birth control.

He said when she went to checkout, an employee refused to scan the condoms because of his faith. Perez added that the cashier embarrassed his girlfriend “in front of other customers because of her reproductive choices.”

However, the company claims an employee is allowed to refuse to ring up an item under its policies. A spokesperson for Walgreens says the employee did not violate the company policy.

“Our policies are designed to ensure we meet the needs of our patients and customers while respecting the religious and moral beliefs of our team members,” the spokesperson said. “The instances are rare. However, when a team member has a moral or religious conviction about completing a transaction, they are required to refer the customer to another employee or manager on duty who will complete the transaction, which is what occurred in this instance.”

No other word have been made about the incident.
