Major Retailers Recall Laxative Products Due to Microbial Contamination

Following reports of “serious adverse reactions,” major retailers recalled certain laxatives for microbial contamination.
The Magnesium Citrate Saline Laxative Oral Solution is now being voluntarily recalled in all flavors, according to Smyrna, Tennessee-based Vi-Jon LLC.
The company claims that immunocompromised patients who use the product risk contracting “invasive infections caused by Gluconacetobacter liquefaciens that could lead to serious, life-threatening adverse health consequences.”

“To date, Vi-Jon, LLC is aware of three reports of serious adverse reactions potentially related to this recall,” a statement posted to the FDA’s website. “Vi-Jon, LLC is in the process of investigating these reports.”

Product flavors Lemon, Cherry, and Grape, are also now included in the recall.

Several retailer outlets, such as CVS, Kroger, Walgreens, Harris Teeter, Rite Aid, and Walmart, carry the constipation relief product.

The product is packaged in a 10-oz. clear round plastic bottle.
