A Texas man who brought a gun inside the Capitol during the January 6th attack has been sentenced to 87 months in prison.

Guy Reffitt, a member of the far-right militia group, the Texas Three Percenters, has received the longest sentence thus far for his role in the hostile 2021 assault. He was found guilty in March of obstructing Congress’ certification of President Biden’s Electoral College win and other charges. Initially, prosecutors sought 15 years, stating that Reffitt was a serious threat and that his actions amounted to terrorism.

During Monday’s hearing, Reffitt admitted he acted like a “f*****g idiot” on January 6th. He apologized to members of Congress and the officers he clashed with that day. He told Judge Dabney Friedrich that he went a “little too crazy,” though Friedrich was not buying it and felt the apology was “half-hearted.”

Reffitt’s son, Jackson, said he is upset by the whole ordeal but is not surprised by his father’s actions.

“What my father did is far from politics. This is completely off-the-rails violence. Whether it had a political motive at this point doesn’t matter,” Jackson told CNN’s Brianna Keilar.

Following the 7.25-year sentence, Reffitt must complete three years of probation and pay a $2,000 fine. His punishment is now the longest of the Capitol rioters. Earlier this year, two other defendants received 63 months for participating in the insurgence.
