Passenger Fined Nearly $2,000 For Packing 'Undeclared' McDonald's Food Items In Luggage

undeclared food item forced passenger arriving in Australia to pay a $1,874 fine. AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT

A passenger was fined nearly $2,000 after some McDonald’s food items were found in their luggage.

Now, we all know airport security ain’t nothing to play around with, especially when they told you to take out any questionable items in your baggage. Well, one traveler learned the hard way after they had to come out of their pocket $1,874 after officials at Australia’s Darwin Airport found two undeclared egg and beef sausage McMuffins and a ham croissant.

It all happened last week when the traveler was flying from Bali, Indonesia, to Australia. CNN Travel reports that there are new, stricter rules around onboarding food after an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease (FMD) in Indonesia. Australia’s Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry considered the breakfast items to be a “range of undeclared risk products.”

In a statement, the department said the passenger was given a “12-unit infringement notice for failing to declare potential high biosecurity risk items and providing a false and misleading document.” CNN Travel reports the items will be tested for FMD and then destroyed.
