A young boy who initially told police an intruder killed his mother has confessed to accidentally killing her.
Ayobiyi Cook, a 29-year-old registered nurse in Jefferson County, Alabama, was found dead in her suburban home on the 2400 block of Freemont Avenue after midnight on August 6th. The 12-year-old boy reported that an intruder entered their home, shot his mother, and fled the scene. However, upon further investigation, authorities determined that was not possible. Eventually, the child admitted that he unintentionally killed his mom and quickly fabricated the story. Evidence at the scene supported that the murder was an accident.
The boy’s father and Cook’s husband, Jarvis Cook, is an officer with the Birmingham Police Department and was at work during the shooting. The child was released into his custody, and it does not appear that he will face charges, though the case must be processed in the family court system.
The boy’s identity has not been released, and it remains unclear whose gun was used in the shooting.
