A well-known Chicago entrepreneur who spread joy through sweets was gunned down earlier this week, leaving his family and supporters searching for answers.
Tavares Davis, the founder of “The Funnel Cake Man,” a popular funnel cake shop with locations inside Orland Square Mall and Southlake Mall, was killed Tuesday, August 2nd, in Dolton. He was found deceased near the corner of Drexel Avenue and 155th Street. Authorities believe Tavares had been robbed, as no keys, wallet, jewelry, or other valuables were found with him.
On Sunday, loved ones and neighbors held a balloon release to honor the man who wanted to help his community. His wife, Nakesha Davis, says the killers left a void in her life that cannot be filled.
“Whoever robbed my husband has robbed us. They robbed me of my husband and partner, and they robbed my children,” Nakesha told WGN9. She also urged anyone with information about her husband’s murder to speak up.
Davis’s family and community activists Andrew Holmes and Michael Airhart put up a $3,000 reward, which was increased to $5,000 by Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard for any information leading to an arrest. While no arrests have been made, the family says at least one person of interest has been identified.
For now, Nakesha says it is “imperative” that she continue running the business that Tavares put his all into.
