A safe haven box has been installed in honor of a little boy who was found dead in a suitcase earlier this year.
The Washington County Ambulance Service Baby Box is located at 1013 Webb Street in Salem, Indiana. The box is meant for parents to safely surrender their infants legally and anonymously. These safe havens are typically located inside hospitals and fire departments. Once the box is opened, an alarm notifies first responders but is not heard by the person leaving the child. The parent will not face charges when using the box.
The safe haven box was put in place in honor of an unidentified boy found dead in Washington County on April 16th. The child is believed to have been five years old and African-American. He was located by mushroom hunters inside a suitcase that read “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas, Nevada.” Despite hundreds of tips, police have not found the child’s family or determined his name. He was laid to rest in a service attended by first responders and community members. Citizens have dubbed him “Angel.”
The new safe haven box is the 88th of its kind in Indiana. Currently, there are over 100 safe haven boxes in the U.S.
