Move over colleges; Fisk University is in the middle of “just making history.” The Nashville HBCU hosted its first-ever gymnastics team after being the first college to have a gymnastics team.
The first practice went viral on TikTok; the women’s team is practicing and gearing up for the January 2023 season.
Zyia, @zyiaalexys on TikTok, shared some clips of the team doing their workouts. They are doing it all, from flips to stretches, and it’s awe-inspiring.
The video captioned, “first hbcu gymnastics team!! lets get it 💙💛.”
The video received over 720,000 views, with over 200,000 likes and 6,000 comments pouring with love and support.”
One comment said, “As a retired gymnast who always wanted her hbcu to have a gymnastics team I almost shed a tear cause seeing this is beautiful.”
One commented, “Y’all are going to dominate. I can FEEL IT.”
While another said, “Can’t wait to see this on ESPN.”
Fisk University announced in February that it would be the first-ever HBCU to launch an intercollegiate women’s gymnastic team.
The university’s official Twitter account reposted the viral video captioning, “Oh nothing, just making history!!”

In a press release announcing the first HBCU team, Fisk University said, “Woman’s gymnastics exemplifies the values of Fisk University: determination, excellence, and a commitment to a more just and equitable future,” the school said part. “These values have consistently been at the forefront of women’s gymnastics, and Fisk could not be more excited to welcome these remarkable student-athletes to the campus starting this coming fall.”
