First Lady Dr. Jill Biden tested positive for covid-19 Tuesday.
“After testing negative for Covid-19 on Monday during her regular testing cadence, the First Lady began to develop cold-like symptoms late in the evening. She tested negative again on a rapid antigen test, but a PCR test came back positive,” said Elizabeth Alexander, her communications director.
The 71-year-old, who is vaccinated and double boosted, has been prescribed the antiviral treatment Paxlovid and is reportedly experiencing mild symptoms.
She is in South Carolina with President Biden, who is set to return to DC on Tuesday for a bill signing. Press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre says the President continues to test negative and will continue to follow CDC guidelines.
This is the first lady’s first stint with covid-19. It follows President Biden’s recent bout with the virus. He initially tested positive on July 21 and isolated while taking the antiviral treatment Paxlovid. He then tested negative on July 27, but on July 30, he tested positive again with a rebound case. Health officials claim this sometimes happens to people who take Paxlovid. President Biden later emerged from the White House on August 7 after testing negative twice in a row.
