A witness in the RICO case involving rapper Young Thug and YSL was outted online, and now they’re reportedly being threatened by gang sympathizers.
Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis revealed this week that documents naming a cooperating witness leaked online, and now that person and their family, which includes “very small children,” have been subjected to multiple threats. Willis said authorities are investigating who leaked the witness’ name that reportedly happened during discovery, which in legal terms refers to the material one side turns over to the other following an indictment to even the playing field before a trial, WSB-TV Atlanta reports.
“YSL enthusiasts and/or actual gang members are threatening someone they believe is cooperating with the State,” Willis said. “And not only that person, but their very small children.”
Willis says the D.A. office is taking precautions and working to keep all witnesses safe.
“We’re going to have to do things to make sure that the witnesses are safe. We need people to understand that they can cooperate. They can do the right thing and the state will be here to protect them,” Willis said.
Young Thug’s attorney, Brian Steel, seemingly agrees with the D.A. and says people should not be outting witnesses.
“Whomever is placing items of discovery online is not doing anybody a favor. It is totally inappropriate to try this case in social media. This case will be tried fairly and justly in Fulton County Superior Court,” Steel said. “Mr. Williams has committed no crime whatsoever. I look forward to the commencement of the jury trial.”
Rappers Young Thug and Gunna, as well as more than a dozen other YSL members, have been behind bars since May following a sweeping indictment alleging conspiracy to violate the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act and additional serious charges.
