An overwhelming amount of fentanyl-related deaths are leading to a limited amount of space in morgues across the country.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 67 percent of all drug overdoses and drug poisonings from the beginning of 2021 to January 2022 were connected to synthetic opioids like fentanyl. And in response, morgues across the country are finding it difficult to keep up with the number of bodies they can store and maintain.
“The most common non-natural death is opioids; it’s more than our number of homicides, more than our number of traffic accidents,” said Chicago’s Cook County Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Ponni Arunkumar, Fox News reports.
From 2015 to 2021, synthetic opioid deaths went from 6,000 to 63,000.
“Most of them were related to fentanyl… These opioid deaths are preventable; all these deaths are preventable,” said Dr. Arunkumar.
