The world’s first hydrogen-powered passenger trains have been unveiled.
As the country continues to find solutions to climate change, the world’s first hydrogen-powered trains are here to help. CNN Travel reports the trains come as part of a $92.3 million deal between Germany’s state subsidiary Landesnahverkehrsgesellschaft Niedersachsen (LVNG) and Alstom, builders of the Coradia iLint trains. The plan has been in the works since 2012.
On Wednesday, five of the fourteen trains with make their debut. They are set to run only on the route to Bremervörde, Lower Saxony. Instead of damaging emissions, the trains will emit steam and condensed water from their exhausts. CNN Travel reports the 14 trains will eventually replace the 15 diesel-powered trains.
The Elbe-Weser Railways and Transport Company (EVB) will also operate the locomotives. “Emission-free mobility is one of the most important goals for ensuring a sustainable future,” said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, Alstom’s CEO, in a statement.
