The New York Police Department is implementing a new concealed carry permit license rule.
Following a Supreme Court decision, the state of New York created new licensing rules for concealed carry permits. Previously, the Supreme Court ruled that New York’s rule regarding concealed carry permits was illegal as it relates to constitutional rights. Now, the state is removing its “proper cause” rule that applicants had to prove in order to receive a permit.
However, suppose a person does want to apply for a concealed carry permit. In that case, they will have to include four references along with a list of the social media accounts that they’ve used for the last three years. In addition, they will have to participate in an in-person interview and take a safety course on firearms.
“These emergency rules are required so that the State’s new firearms licensing standards and conforming changes to the Police Department’s firearms licensing scheme take effect simultaneously,” the NYPD wrote in its announcement. “Delaying implementation of these rules would severely impede New York City’s ability to regulate handgun use and ownership within its jurisdiction.”
The state’s new law will go into effect on Sept. 1.
