A Memphis gunman was arrested Thursday after he live-streamed a random shooting that killed four and injured three.
Police issued a shelter-in-place warning throughout the city, including locking down a baseball stadium and university campuses. Public transport service was also suspended residents feared the gunman might strike again.
Police spokeswoman Karen Rudolph said Ezekiel Kelly, 19, was taken into custody in the Memphis neighborhood of Whitehaven around 9 pm.
At a news conference early Thursday, Memphis Police Director Cerelyn “CJ” Davis reported that seven shootings and at least two carjackings resulted in four fatalities and three injuries.
Davis said officers responded to the first fatal shooting at around 12:56 am on Wednesday and then three other crime scenes before receiving a tip at 6:12 pm that the suspect was live streaming himself threatening citizens with harm.
Following the shootings, police issued an alert urging people to keep an eye out for an armed and dangerous man live streaming his actions on Facebook.
As shown in one video, he casually spoke to the camera before opening a store door and shooting at someone with a pistol.
Shortly after, police said he killed a woman in Memphis when he stole her grey Toyota SUV, which he left behind when he took a man’s Dodge Challenger across the state line in Southaven, Mississippi.
Davis said that a high-speed chase ended with Kelly being captured without incident two hours after the initial alert, and two guns were found in the Challenger.
Neither the motive nor the identities of those killed or wounded were disclosed.
Ali Roberts, acting assistant special agent in charge for the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco, said it was too early in the investigation to discuss how the suspect obtained the gun or guns used in the shooting.
