On Sunday, former MLB pitcher and Port Authority police officer Anthony Varvaro died while traveling to a 9/11 memorial event.

The New Jersey State Police shared on Twitter that he was killed in a car crash before he could report to “a detailed assignment at the World Trade Center 9/11 Ceremony.”

According to Trooper Brandi Slota, a New Jersey State Police spokesperson, the collision occurred in Jersey City at roughly 4:25 a.m.

The former baseball player, 37, was traveling east when he was struck by a vehicle traveling west, causing Varvaro’s car to hit a concrete barrier.

Police have identified the other vehicle’s driver as 30-year-old Henry A. Plazas, who also died.

Varvaro played for the Atlanta Braves, Seattle Mariners, and Boston Red Sox between 2010 and 2015 before retiring from baseball in 2016.

The Atlanta Braves released a statement on Twitter that read: “We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Braves pitcher Anthony Varvaro,” the statement read. “Anthony, 37, played parts of six seasons in the majors, including four with Atlanta.”
