The House has passed a bill that targets future elections from being tampered with or stolen as a follow-up to the Jan. 6 attack of the U.S. Capitol.
In a 229 to 203 vote this past Wednesday, the United States House of Representatives signed off on a bill that seeks to block any tampering with elections. The bill would change the 1887 Electoral Count Act by solidifying the vice president’s role in overseeing the Electoral College count after each election is legitimately ministerial, NBC Reports.
“If your aim is to prevent future efforts to steal elections, I would respectfully suggest that conservatives should support this bill,” said Rep. Liz Cheney on the floor, NBC News reports. “If instead, your aim is to leave open the door for elections to be stolen in the future, you might decide not to support this or any other bill to address the Electoral Count Act.”
Cheney went on: “Our bill will preserve the rule of law for all future presidential elections by ensuring that self-interested politicians cannot steal from the people the guarantee that our government derives its power from the consent of the governed.”
