After receiving criticism from fans, Netflix decided to remove the LGBTQ tag from Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
The platform has used tags such as LGBTQ so that members of the marginalized group have some representation in its shows and movies.
According to the streaming service, every show and movie on the platform is tagged to make it easier for customers to find their search requests.
Since the show’s release, some of the LGBTQ community were offended by the tag because the Dahmer series was not the representation they would choose. The victims’ families have also experienced more trauma from watching the series.
“I feel like it fetishizes this whole horrible moment in Milwaukee history. It shouldn’t be looked at that way, it just feels completely wrong,” said drag performer B.J. Daniels. “I know a lot of my friends, and a lot of people who lived through this period, will not be watching it. They will not be putting money into somebody’s pocket that is literally disturbing the graves of victims.”
