An Uber rider was charged thousands for a 15-minute Uber ride after his destination was accidentally set to Australia.
According to The Independent and Manchester Evening News, a 22-year-old man named Oliver Kaplan requested an Uber to pick him up from Manchester, England, in an effort to go meet up with his friends after work who were about four miles away.
The next day, he woke up to an Uber email that alerted him about not having enough money to pay his bill of $35,427.97.
“I ordered an Uber like I do most nights on the way home from work and everything seemed normal. The driver arrived, I got in the Uber and he took me exactly where I was meant to be going,” said Kaplan of the 10 to 11-minute ride. “It was a 15-minute journey – tops – and the bill was said to be between £10 and £11, charged to my debit card.”
When he contacted Uber, he learned the price was so high because his destination was accidentally changed to Australia. By the end of it, his charge was amended, and he only had to pay $10.73.
“If I had that sort of money, I would have had to chase them for a refund – it could have landed me in all sorts of financial trouble,” Kaplan told Manchester News, Insider reports.
