There has been a lot of backlash over the Jeffrey Dahmer-inspired Halloween costumes being worn this year.
The trend comes after Netflix releases a series about Dahmer’s notorious murders. Sadly, families of his victims have suffered from the aftermath of it all, including a woman named Shirley.
Shirley’s son, Tony Hughes, was a deaf, non-vocal victim among the 17 young men murdered by Dahmer. She told TMZ it’s already super triggering to see a hit series about the serial killer, much less folks wearing a costume in his honor.
While most big retail stores have decided not to sell JD costumes, many have purchased the costume online on sites like eBay. The costume includes props as well; blonde wigs, retro-style tops, and his now infamous wire-rimmed glasses.
The mother said it hurts for Netflix and online stores to profit off her son’s death, while none of the victims’ families have seen a dime from the money earned. She also feels all the eBay ads should be removed or, at the very least, give the profits to the families.
She blames Netflix over the recent Dahmer craze, saying it’s because of the series that the families have to relive the trauma.
Dahmer was sentenced to life behind bars in 1992. He was beaten to death while in prison two years later.
Shirley added that Dahmer was pure evil and doesn’t understand why anyone would want to dress up like him for Halloween.
