Kanye West never seems to watch his tongue. But the time of him getting passes may be up. His bizarre false claims regarding George Floyd’s death may cost him.
The family of Floyd is in talks of suing one of the world’s richest Black men following his recent appearance on the Drink Champs podcast.
“While one cannot defame the dead, the family of #GeorgeFloyd is considering suit for Kanye’s false statements about the manner of his death. Claiming Floyd died from fentanyl, not the brutality established criminally and civilly undermines & diminishes the Floyd family’s fight,” Lee Merritt, a lawyer for Floyd’s family, said in a statement posted to social media on Sunday.
Many believe ‘Ye is experiencing a mental episode, which aligns with his bipolar disorder that he’s spoken on in the past, but that still hasn’t stopped media platforms from bringing him on and allowing him to continue making controversial statements.
During the podcast, West falsely claimed that Floyd died from fentanyl. “I watched the George Floyd documentary that Candace Owens put out… They hit him with the fentanyl. If you look, the guy’s knee wasn’t even on his neck like that,” West said.
While Floyd had a trace amount of fentanyl in his system, it was determined by a coroner and medical experts that he died from a lack of oxygen caused by former police officer Derek Chauvin placing his knee on top of his neck for eight minutes.
West made a three-hour appearance on Drink Champs and continued his antisemitic behavior by making more derogatory remarks about Jewish people. He repeatedly insulted his ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, her former boyfriend, Pete Davidson, and other fellow entertainers, including Puff Daddy and John Legend. They have made comments against West’s recent behavior.
What is problematic is that most of the Yeezy mogul’s statements went unchallenged by the podcast’s hosts.
