The Social Security Administration revealed earlier this week that individuals can now make changes to their records to reflect their gender identity,

Kilolo Kijakazi, the Agency’s acting commissioner, said the move is part of a “commitment to decrease administrative burdens and ensure people who identify as gender diverse or transgender have options in the Social Security Number card application process.”

Additionally, it’s a component of a more significant initiative to promote acceptance of gender identity under the Biden administration.

Applicants at Social Security can self-identify as male or female, regardless of the gender designation on identity documents, such as a passport or driver’s license.
In the future, the Agency plans to offer an “X” designation for the application process for SSN cards for non-binary individuals.
