Multinational consumer goods company Unilever is recalling dry shampoo aerosol products over high levels of a cancer-causing chemical.
A highly flammable and sweet-scented chemical called benzene is the reason behind a massive recall of products that are being sold across the country. Items like deodorant, hand sanitizer and sunscreen all often include the benzene, which is noted to have the ability to cause cancer.
The latest recall includes a variety of different beauty and hygiene products from several brands, including Dove, Nexxus, Suave and more, CBS News reports. This is the second time this year Unilever has announced a recall over products that could contain the hazardous chemical.
Unilever is the mother company of Dove, Sunsilk, Knorr, Seventh Generation and more.
“Benzene is such a bad molecule — it’s at the very top of the FDA’s list of 70-some solvents not to use,” said David Light, CEO of Valisure, an independent lab in New Haven, Connecticut, that reported benzene findings in sunscreen to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year, CBS News reports. He added that “there’s no argument about whether or not it causes cancer in human beings.”
