Officials in the Mexican state of Zacatecas say a stray dog was seen running down the street with a human head.
A “law enforcement official who was not authorized to be quoted by name” told the Associated Press that the head was left in an ATM booth along with other body parts on Wednesday.
Video of the incident circulating on social media shows the dog trotting along a darkened street, holding the head in its mouth by the neck. People were able to take the head away from the dog.
Before the dog took the head, someone had reported finding the body parts, along with a backpack and bloodied notes. The notes referred to a drug cartel.
The ATM where the remains were found is located near a government building.
The town where the body parts were discovered, Monte Escobedo, has been entrenched in a violent turf war between the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels.
According to the AP, cartels leave notes with human remains as an intimidation tactic. Sometimes they are left for rival gangs, and other times they are meant for authorities.
