Oldham County Detention Center

The leader of a Black militia group who was arrested during the 2020 Breonna Taylor protests in Louisville has been sentenced to seven years and two months in prison after being found guilty of assaulting and brandishing a firearm toward state and federal officers.

John Johnson, also known as Grandmaster Jay, was indicted by a federal grand jury in February 2021 and found guilty in May of this year. According to court docs, the “Not F—— Around Coalition” leader traveled from Cincinnati to Louisville and, on the evening of September 4, 2020, “aimed/brandished” an AR rifle at officers who were on the roof of the Jefferson County Grand Jury building in downtown Louisville. During that time, several groups were in Jefferson Square Park that day protesting the death of Breonna Taylor.

The 59-year-old will also have to serve 3 years of supervised release following his prison release.

He was facing 20 years in federal prison.
