Lil Wayne calls Jay-Z “the greatest rapper of all time” while discussing a potential VERZUZ battle.
Wayne recently appeared on former NFL player Marcellus Wiley’s ‘More To It’ podcast. During the interview, Wayne was asked who he thinks would be the best competition for Cash Money in a VERZUZ battle.
Despite there being a handful for legendary hip-hop/rap labels still active in the industry, Wayne opted for Roc-A-Fella.
“I would say the best competition, I would have to go with Roc-A-Fella,” he responded. “JAY-Z the homie.”
Wayne went on to explain his decision and refers to Jay-Z as the Tom Brady of the music industry.
“The greatest rapper of all time is Shawn ‘JAY-Z’ Carter,” Wayne said. “When you do this rapping thing, obviously like football, every sport is different. You play hockey, I’m sure they got something that they only know about. Something that they probably can’t explain, but only they know. That thing in rap, that we only know in rap, he has that. He’s the Tom Brady of that.”
In a 2016 interview, Wayne claimed that Jay-Z previously tried to sign him to Roc-A-Fella for $175,000.
“That man offered me 175 [thousand dollars],” he stated. “I said, ‘Believe that.’ I was looking like… two teeth in my mouth is 175 [thousand dollars]. My bottom teeth. We laugh about that all the time.”
That same year, Wayne was involved in a legal battle with Cash Money and rumors circulated that the rapper was moving over to Roc-A-Fella. The allegations came after Wayne threw up the label’s iconic Diamond hand symbol at Tyler The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival. Wayne also changed his lyrics to “I’m Me” during his performance.
“I’m a muthafuckin’ Roc-A-Fella millionaire,” he rapped, replacing Cash Money with Jay-Z’s label.
