Quavo mourned his nephew Takeoff in a touching post on Saturday, in his first official statement since Takeoff was shot and killed.
The statement also served as Quavo’s speech from Takeoff’s public memorial service, which took place Friday at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
“Dear Take,” the Migos rapper began. “It’s so hard to tell you Ima miss you because you always with me and we did everything together. Since we were kids you been by my side looking up at me, them eyes waiting on me to make the next move.. Then you followed up right behind me. You always made sure I did it first so you can do it right with me. You never competed with me, we were always on the same team.”
He touched on a few of Takeoff’s personality traits, calling him “the quietest in the room.” He also noted that despite his nephew’s quiet nature, he was very observant. He also described Takeoff as “the most unbothered person in the world.” He added that he was “by far the funniest person in the room. Once you got him goin he wouldn’t stop.”
He credits Takeoff as the one with the passion for music, knowing every word of the Hot Boyz album. He described how they once won a talent show at the Boys and Girls Club performing Big Timers’ “Get Ya Roll On.”
Quavo also said that Takeoff felt more like a brother to him than a nephew. He hated the term “nephew” and said it made him feel old.
“This whole time I’ve been trying to figure out what you really are to me because nephew wasn’t it,” he continued. “We hated that word ‘nephew’ or when they said ‘Unc and Phew’ cuz we always knew we were way closer than that and it made me feel old too. But I knew you weren’t my brother cuz you are my sister’s son so I couldn’t say brother. Now I finally get it…you are OUR angel.”
He continues, “Me and u knew we gon always be with each other for life and jus like now we gon see each other again.”
He concluded the statement by heartbreakingly asking God what tools are necessary to once again be with Takeoff.
“So can you ask Him for me what I gotta do to be with you again!!! In a place where there is no pain, no demons, no jealousy, no envy, no greed. Whatever we have to do God to be that place of paradise send us the tools now cuz we wanna be with Take.”
Quavo was with Takeoff the night he was shot and killed in Houston. Takeoff’s death is still under investigation, and no suspects have been identified. The Houston Police Department is asking anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
