“The Petito family lost their daughter, and they were also denied the opportunity to confront her killer,” Patrick Reilly, attorney for Petito’s parents, told CNN. “No amount of money is sufficient to compensate the Petito family for the loss of their daughter, Gabby, at the hands of Brian Laundrie. Brian did not have $3 million; it’s an arbitrary number. Whatever monies they do receive will help Gabby’s family in their endeavors with the Gabby Petito Foundation.”
He said, “Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt wish to turn their personal tragedy into a positive. It is their hope that Gabby’s foundation will bring these important issues into the forefront of the public eye to the benefit of all our communities.”
If you can recall, Petito and Laundrie made headlines back in 2021 after Petito was reported missing by her family. The two had been on a cross-country trip together, but by the time news surfaced of Petito’s disappearance, Laundrie was also missing.
Several days later, on September 21st, Petito’s body was discovered, and her cause of death was ruled as strangulation. In October, Laundrie was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
In January 2022, police reported that a written confession was found near Laundrie’s remains.
