PlayStation 6 to Debut In 2027 or 2028, According to Newly Released Sony Docs

As if the PlayStation 5 wasn’t hard enough to obtain, Sony is already planning the next installment of the gaming system.

Newly revealed records confirm that Sony is currently building a high-end gaming system. However, Sony says this new upgrade will not be released until 2027 or 2028, leaving fans at least five years to continue enjoying the PS5, that’s if they’ve managed to get one.

The PS6 plans were unveiled as part of an investigation launched by the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority into Microsoft’s $68 billion merger with Activision. Sony is not fond of this deal, as it could possibly jeopardize competition, industry players, and users. The company is also concerned about the future of Call of Duty on PlayStation consoles, worried that by the time the PS6 arrives, CoD will not be accessible on PlayStation under the new merger.

While the PS6 is in some stage of production and is sure to create the same widespread pandemonium as its predecessor, the current PS5 crisis has shown some sign of relief, though many still struggle to buy one. This year’s reports indicate that the gaming system has been a bit easier to purchase since its release in November 2020.

“To meet this strong demand, we will do our utmost to bring forward supply into the year-end holiday selling season and aim to exceed our financial year 2022 forecast of 18 million units,” shared Sony’s executive deputy president and CFO Hiroki Totoki.

Part of the PS5 shortage can be attributed to the semiconductor chip shortage that slowed down production drastically. Still, the company has managed to bounce back, with over 20 million units sold as of June.

No details regarding the PlayStation 6’s capabilities or features were mentioned in the released documents. The only thing for sure is that the console is on its way.
