Getting arrested while on vacation is a traveling nightmare we hope to never experience. But letting lose is something we tend to do when on vacation, so much so that it could go terribly wrong.
Thousands of travelers end up behind bars while on a trip, especially in Las Vegas or during Mardi Gras in New Orleans. The majority of the time, partying or alcohol is involved, and people do things they wouldn’t typically do when sober.
But no need to fret. Whether you got a little too rowdy at spring break or had a bar fight after one too many drinks, there are some things you can do if you end up in the slammer.
First thing first, remains calm and cooperative. Don’t resist arrest because that can lead to additional charges. Give the officers your name and be prepared to be taken to jail. Once there, you will be booked, and depending on the charges, you’ll know what you need to do next.
Know your rights, and don’t incriminate yourself because anything you say can and will be used against you. You have the right to remain silent and can ask for an attorney. If you have one back at home, they may be able to help to some extent. But you’ll likely need a local attorney, which is a plus because they have experience with the local judges.
Use your one phone call wisely. Either call an attorney or close family/friend. Whoever you call will need to get the ball rolling to help you get out or pay the bail. If the charges are minor, your primary focus can be on paying the bond. Sometimes you may just have to stay overnight and be released the next day. But if that’s not the case, you can wait to see a judge—typically the next day unless it’s a weekend—to see if bail is necessary.
Once you’re released, keep up with your case so that you don’t miss any court dates or rulings made by the judge. If you end up having to hire an attorney, they should keep you updated.
Most importantly, try not to get arrested.
