Multiple water treatment plants in Houston, Texas, lost power on Sunday, resulting in a boil water notice.
In a news release, Houston Public Works stated that the East Water Purification Plant’s water pressure had fallen “below the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality’s required minimum of 20 PSI during a power outage.”
People without power are encouraged to use bottled water instead of drinking unboiled water. The agency advises boiling all water for no less than two minutes before drinking it.
Following the Sunday night power loss, all customers’ water pressure was quickly restored.
Sylvester Turner, the mayor of Houston, stated that although the city believes the water to be safe, they were required by law to issue the boil water notice.
“Water samples will subsequently follow, and hopefully, we will get the all-clear from TCEQ,” Turner tweeted. “The City has to wait 24 hours from that point before the boil water notice is suspended. The earliest would be tomorrow night or very early Tuesday morning.”
The public will be notified when water is once again safe to drink without boiling.
Due to the boil water advisory, the Houston Independent School District closed its campuses on Monday.
