Nick Carter of the Backstreet Boys is in hot water after several women have come forward claiming that he raped them.
Victim Shannon “Shay” Ruth filed a civil lawsuit on Thursday in a Nevada court, recounting a terrifying encounter that took place 21 years ago. According to Ruth, she was just 17 years old in 2001 when Carter chose her from a group of young girls seeking autographs from the band after a show in Tacoma, Washington. Carter, who would’ve been 21 at the time, invited Ruth onto the bus. He then gave her “VIP juice” before raping her repeatedly despite her pleas for him to stop, according to the victim. As if she was not traumatized enough, Ruth claims that the singer infected her with human papillomavirus, widely known as HPV.
The now 39-year-old says it has taken her over 20 years to come forward due to fear of retaliation from the pop star. What makes the lawsuit so damning is that Ruth is not the only woman coming forward. Three other Jane Doe’s were also listed in the case with similar disturbing tales of sexual abuse that took place between 2003 and 2006. All three women say Carter gave them alcohol before forcing himself on them. One of the unidentified women was underage at the time.
Carter may be one of our favorite pop guys of the late 90s and early 2000s, but allegations such as these are not new. In 2017, Melissa Schuman of the teen girl group Dream accused him of sexually assaulting her in 2003 when she was 18 years old. However, Carter maintained that their encounter was consensual.
Carter hasn’t responded to the claims, but a source close to him has stated that they were false. Each victim is seeking unspecified damages.
