R. Kelly denies involvement in the 13-track album I Admit It that dropped on Friday, and he says it’s not even him singing.
TMZ obtained audio of a jailhouse call Kelly made shortly after he met with his attorney, Jennifer Bonjean. In the recording, Kelly adamantly denies that he would put out any music right now and says that something like this could interfere with his appeal.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed to the outlet that Kelly had no access to recording equipment while behind bars.
“I wouldn’t even put an album out right now while I’m dealing with all this stuff anyway, ok?” Kelly says in the tape. “I hope people recognize my voice and know that.”
Kelly’s label, Sony Music, has denied any involvement in the album. The outlet reports that the tape was released by Ingrooves, a distributor owned by Universal Music Group, not Sony. Shortly after it was released, I Admit It was removed from Spotify and Apple Music.
Kelly’s legal team is now working to find out who may have put the album out.
Kelly is serving out a 30-year prison sentence for federal sex crimes. He is scheduled to be sentenced in February for his Illinois federal case.
