This is disgraceful beyond measure. An 82-year-old woman was handcuffed and taken to jail over a $77 past-due trash bill.
Apparently, the protocol in Valley, Alabama, is to issue a warrant and arrest those that don’t pay their trash bill, which is why two cops went to the home of Martha Menefield.
A video of the incident is circulating, and many are appalled. The elderly woman was late on paying her $77.80 trash bill and was rightfully confused that she had to go to jail for it.
Officers knocked on her door and told her she had a warrant to which she was confused. The officer is heard telling Menefield that he is not joking.
“So you’re gonna handcuff me and take ms to jail?” Menefield asked. “Yes, ma’am, I have to,” the officer responded.
Footage also recorded one of the officers laughing at one point during the arrest.
Ms. Menefield told the officers that her daughter handles the bill for her, but they still insisted she had to go to jail.
She was then handcuffed, told “the law is the law,” and placed in the back of the police car.
Terrible!
These cops must be arrested. We require them to have common sense and common decency. Even if a supervisor tells them to ignore her rights, they are bound by our laws to refuse to do so. What are we going to do about this?
No, you are wrong. A judge issuing an unconstitutional warrant is NULL AND VOID! Cops cannot ignore her rights under any circumstances. This cop speaking is unworthy of being in such role.
This is just a Goddamn Travesty !!! Arresting you for a goddamn trash bill ??? It use to be a law against arresting someone for a fucking bill !!!!
