‘RHOSLC’ star Jen Shah was sentenced to six years and six months in a Texas federal prison Friday after she pleaded guilty to committing wire fraud in a telemarketing scheme that targeted the elderly.
The reality tv star pleaded guilty to the charges last summer. She agreed to make restitution of more than $9 million to those she deceived and to forfeit $6.5 million to the government, Variety reported.
Shah was arrested on March 30, 2021, with a lot of the incident captured during the filming for “The Real Housewives of Salt Lake City.” Her case was heard in the Southern District of New York and presided over by Judge Sidney Stein.
Shah arrived at court with her family, including her husband, University of Utah assistant football coach Sharrieff Shah, and her two sons Sharrieff Shah Jr. and Omar Shah, Fox News reported.
Shah apologized during the hearing, saying in part, “My actions have hurt innocent people. I want to apologize by saying I am doing all I can to earn the funds to pay restitution.”
“With the proper medication, I can now see what happened. I wish I could have stood outside myself. I am sorry. I have found solace in my volunteer work with anti-racism organizations and the LGBT community.” She also apologized to her family.
The Justice Department initially requested she receives ten years behind bars. However, her defense team argued against it and requested a three-year sentence, supporting their request by calling Shah “an exceptional mother and a good woman who has already been punished extensively as a result of the sins of her past.”
Shah and her assistant, Stuart Smith, were “each charged with one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection with telemarketing through which they victimized ten or more persons over the age of 55, which carries a maximum sentence of 30 years, and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years,” the Department of Justice said when they were both arrested.
She initially faced up to 50 years in prison.
