New Jersey Woman Sentenced to 3-Years in Prison For Role in Homeless Veteran GoFundMe Scam

Katelyn McClure, the Woman Involved in $400K GoFundMe Scam For Homeless Veteran, Sentenced to Prison

A New Jersey woman who raised thousands of dollars for a GoFundMe scam has been sentenced to prison for three years.

The story went viral in 2017, alleging a homeless man allegedly gave Katelyn McClure his last $20 after she ran out of gas.
Prosecutors say that the campaign raised approximately $400,000, which donors thought would be given to the homeless man at the center of the story, Johnny Bobbitt.
McClure was sentenced to three years in state prison for her involvement in the scam last Friday.
The state sentence will run concurrently with the one-year, one-day federal sentence she is currently serving.
McClure admitted to “advancing the false narrative” of the viral story in 2019, pleading guilty to second-degree theft by deception in state court.
It was said that McClure acted on the directions of her then-boyfriend, Mark D’Amico, who had previously pleaded guilty at the state and federal levels for his involvement with the scam.
In October, a state court sentenced Bobbitt to a state-run addiction recovery program after he pleaded guilty to a second-degree conspiracy to commit theft by deception.
According to reports, D’Amico and McClure must pay restitution for fraudulently raised funds.
