BMW has unveiled its first color-changing vehicles that are looking to change the automotive industry forever.
BMW’s i Vision Dee concept is a midsize electric sports sedan outfitted with futuristic panels that can switch color on demand. The idea is to have the car swap hues based on the driver’s mood or the weather that day. Nicknamed “The Dee,” which stands for “Digital Emotional Experience,” it can switch between 32 different solid exterior colors and can even mix and match to create patterned looks.
The Dee made its debut last week during the 2023 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. A Reel shared to the Verge Instagram account shows the stunning panels rapidly changing between various shades of pink, purple and white.
According to Oliver Zipse, chairman of the board of management of BMW AG, the company’s most recent invention will change cars from basic modes of transportation into “an intelligent companion” that can offer comfort and luxury to drivers.
While people are already prepared to purchase one of these innovative cars, this concept is just that. If BMW does release The Dee for consumer availability, it likely won’t arrive in dealerships for years. Unfortunately, more studying and advances in technology are needed for The Dee to function properly in the real world. As of now, the panels cannot stand up to the elements of day-to-day driving, such as flying insects and car washes.
