The 2023 NAACP Image Awards nominees have been revealed, and several blockbuster hits are being honored this year.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “The Woman King” are the stars of the 2023 NAACP Image Awards, leading this year’s nominations. The stunning sequel to “Black Panther” raked in 12 nods, while the controversial yet critically acclaimed “The Woman King,” starring Viola Davis, has nine. Davis will face off with Angela Bassett for the highest honor: Entertainment of the Year. They’ll both go head-to-head against Mary J. Blige, Quinta Brunson, and Zendaya.
“Till” also scored six nods, including Outstanding Motion Picture and Outstanding Ensemble Cast in a Motion Picture. “Emancipation,” Will Smith’s dramatic comeback film, raked in five nominations, with his performance as “Peter” making him a top contender in the Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture category.
Following its big win at the Golden Globes, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” received nine nods in the TV and streaming categories. Another ABC series, “Black-ish,” received an impressive yet bittersweet seven nominations for its final season.
Coming off the heels of “Renaissance,” Beyoncé Knowles-Carter scored five nominations, sure to achieve her first award wins of 2023, though a massive amount of trophies are expected for her this award season.
NAACP president and CEO Derrick Johnson stated that the organization is proud to recognize each nominee for the various “outstanding achievements and performances.”
The NAACP Image Awards will take place live on Saturday, February 25th. An audience will be welcomed back at the event for the first time in three years. The public may vote on this year’s winners up until February 10th on the Image Awards’ website.
