When the highly anticipated bronze statue, titled “The Embrace,” was unveiled in Boston days ago, spectators were unsure of what exactly was being depicted and how it related to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Designed by Brooklyn-based conceptual artist Hank Willis Thomas, the $10 million sculpture is supposed to be the arms of MLK embracing his wife, Coretta Scott, after winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. However, when certain angles hit the internet, no one knew what they were looking at. Some believed it was a turd, while others thought it depicted a man performing oral sex.
If nothing else, the statue united people from all walks of life to demand answers for such a unappealing project.
