Onyx Collective has landed a deal to release two documentaries, one from Ryan Coogler and another from Questlove.
The content brand, which runs on Hulu, will air both Questlove’s untitled documentary about Sly Stone and “Anthem,” based on composer Kris Bowers and music producer Dahi’s musical journey across America as they experiment to reimagine the National Anthem if it were written today, Variety reported.
Anthem comes from Proximity Media, which has secured a deal with Onyx Collective in partnership with This Machine.
Peter Nicks will direct the project and produce with Ryan Coogler, Kris Bowers, Sean Havey, and Chris L. Jenkins, with exec producers: R.J. Cutler, Elise Pearlstein, Zinzi Coogler, and Sev Ohanian.
Questlove has been tapped to direct the Stone film based on Stone, also known as Sylvester Stewart. Stewart was the frontman of Sly and the Family Stone and was well-known for spearheading funk music.
The documentary will examine the life and legacy of one of pop music’s top influential artists, covering the group’s rise, reign, and eventual downfall.
It is produced by MRC, Network Entertainment, Sylvester Stewart, Two One Five Entertainment, Stardust Films, and ID8 Multimedia in association with Sony Music Entertainment and recursively produced by Stone, Questlove, Brian Gersh, Shawn Gee, Zarah Zohlman, Common, Derek Dudley, Shelby Stone, Ron Weisner, and Paul Gertz.
Patel will produce, write and direct other projects through his production company, Dub Version, for Onyx Collective.
