The Virginia teacher that a 6-year-old student shot is suing the school district after sufficient evidence warned faculty that the boy might have had a gun.
Diane Toscano, the lawyer of Abigail Zwerner, announced on Wednesday that “concerned teachers and employees warned administrators three times that the boy had a gun on him and was threatening other students, ‘but the administration could not be bothered.'”
The boy shot the 25-year-old during class with a gun owned by his mother at Richneck Elementary in Newport News, Virginia, on January 6.
“Our heart goes out to our son’s teacher, and we pray for her healing in the aftermath of such an unimaginable tragedy as she selflessly served our son and the children in the school,” the child’s family said.
And the family added that the boy had an “acute disability” and was under a new care plan which required his parents to attend a class every day with him. According to the family statement, the week of the shooting was the first time the parents had not been present.
Police Chief Steve Drew characterized the shooting as “intentional” as the 6-year-old aimed at Zwerner and fired one round. Zwerner was in critical condition at the hospital for two weeks. She is currently recovering at home.
