On Monday night, a gunman killed three individuals. He injured at least five others on the campus of Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan, leading to the evacuation of students. At the same time, he eluded numerous law enforcement officers before apparently taking his own life off-campus, according to the university police.
The gunman’s identity was not immediately disclosed, and he was reported dead around midnight on Tuesday, nearly four hours after the initial reports of gunfire.
According to Chris Rozman, the interim deputy police chief of the university police department, some of the injured people have life-threatening injuries, but the names of the victims have not been released. “This has truly been a nightmare that we are living tonight, but we have remained entirely focused on the safety of our students,” Chief Rozman stated.
After 8 p.m., shots were heard on campus, and the university police department issued an alert urging individuals on campus to “secure in place immediately.” As students barricaded themselves in dorm rooms, hundreds of law enforcement officers raced through the empty streets near campus.
Deputy Chief Rozman stated that shots were fired inside Berkey Hall, which houses the college of arts and sciences, and that a second shooting occurred “immediately following the first incident” at the MSU student union.
